“The S&P 500” means different things to different people. For some it’s the index on the evening news, for others it’s the fund in their retirement account, and for traders it’s the futures contract that moves before the opening bell. The ticker shows every one of them, side by side if you like.

How to add any of them

Everything on this page goes in the same way, in about ten seconds per symbol:

1. Open the ticker’s control panel in any browser on your phone or computer.
2. Under What’s on Screen, pick the Stocks tab.
3. In the list, choose Other… and type the symbol exactly as it appears in the tables below, for example ^GSPC, ES=F or VOO. These are the symbols used on finance.yahoo.com, where the ticker gets its prices.
4. Tap + Add. The ticker checks the symbol straight away and shows its full name, for example “ES=F — E-Mini S&P 500 Dec 26”, so you know you’ve got the right one.
5. Repeat for every symbol you want, drag the ⠿ handle to put them in your order, set Switch every to the number of seconds each one stays on screen, and tap Save Display Settings.

A few details that help:

• The caret is part of the symbol. ^ marks an index on Yahoo Finance: type ^GSPC, and the display shows it as GSPC.
• The S&P 500 index lives in the Stocks tab. In the Crypto tab, SPX is the SPX6900 meme coin, so for the index use ^GSPC or ^SPX in the Stocks tab.
• Funds listed outside the US keep their exchange suffix (.L London, .DE Frankfurt, .TO Toronto). The display shows them in the listing’s own currency.
• Up to 100 items in one carousel, mixed freely with crypto, stocks, forex and commodities.

The S&P 500 index and its family

Indices are shown in points, without a currency sign, just like on the financial news. They update about every 30 seconds while the US market is open (9:30 to 16:00 New York time, Monday to Friday) and hold the closing value the rest of the time.

S&P 500 futures: the price before the opening bell

S&P 500 futures trade almost around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday evening, New York time. On the ticker they keep updating about every 30 seconds through the night, so the first thing you see in the morning is where the S&P 500 is likely to open. They are shown in index points.

ES=F always follows the nearest contract month and rolls to the next one on its own, so you add it once and keep it.

S&P 500 ETFs: the fund you actually own

If your money is in an S&P 500 fund, its own price is often the most satisfying number to watch. Funds are shown with a dollar sign and update about every 30 seconds while the US market is open.
